How the assistant works

Last reviewed 4 October 2026

The "Ask a question" page answers questions about the UK curriculum using only the documents in this library. This page explains how, so that schools and parents can judge how far to rely on it.

What happens when you ask

  1. Check. Your message is checked for anything that looks like personal information. If it does, it is refused and not recorded.
  2. Search. The library is searched for the passages most relevant to your question, combining keyword search with meaning-based search. The meaning-based part uses an OpenAI embedding of your question.
  3. Write. A large language model (from OpenAI, or Anthropic as a fallback) writes an answer from those passages only. It is told to state only facts that appear in them, to say plainly when they do not answer the question, and to use British English.
  4. Show sources. The answer lists the documents it used, with links, so you can read the original.

Two modes

  • Parent: plain, jargon-free explanations. It will not diagnose a child and suggests asking the school about anything concerning.
  • Teacher: precise, using the documents' statutory wording and naming the source document and year for any claim about requirements.

Limits

  • Answers can be incomplete or wrong. Always check the linked source before acting, especially on legal duties.
  • The assistant only knows what is in this library. If guidance has changed since a document was added, the answer may be out of date.
  • Exam-board specifications, past papers and mark schemes are not reproduced; the assistant points you to the official link instead.
  • It is not legal, medical or safeguarding advice, and it must not be used for decisions about an individual child.

Safeguards

  • No accounts and no stored conversations; your questions are not used to train models.
  • Personal-information filter on every message.
  • Daily limits per visitor and overall, so the service stays available and costs stay controlled.
  • The assistant has no persona and does not role-play; it only answers questions about the documents.

Who is responsible

iFairy CIC runs the assistant and is responsible for it. If an answer is wrong or harmful, email support@ifairy.co.uk with the question you asked and, if possible, a copy of the answer. See also our privacy notice.
