Reception: The Foundation Year
Early Years Foundation Stage (age 4-5)
What Reception looks like
iFairy editorial guidance — not part of the statutory National Curriculum. The curriculum points below summarise the official programmes of study; the documents linked further down are the authoritative wording.
How this year typically thinks
- Attention
- A few minutes at a time, extending gradually across the year.
- Processing
- Learning two curriculums at once: the formal one (communication, literacy, mathematics, the world) and a hidden one — separating from a carer, entering a group, waiting, sharing adult attention, managing belongings, recovering after frustration.
- Main driver
- Secure participation — learning how to enter, remain in, and benefit from a shared activity.
- Development
- The regulatory foundations of attention, impulse control and emotional self-regulation are still rudimentary. Much of what looks like "not being ready to learn" is the ordinary developmental reality of this age, not a deficit.
Curriculum highlights
- Communication and language: listening, attention and understanding; speaking.
- Literacy: comprehension, word reading, writing.
- Mathematics: number, numerical patterns.
- Understanding the world; personal, social and emotional development; physical development; expressive arts and design.
